The tandoori chicken recipe, we can say it as a jewel of Indian chicken recipes from Indian cuisine. It is one of the most famous and delicious recipes all over the India. Basically, the name tandoori chicken came from the word “Tandoor”. Which is the clay pot used to make the tandoori chicken recipe.

Tandoori chicken is roasted chicken, that originated in the Punjab region of Indian. The tandoori chicken recipe was traditionally associated with Punjab and it became more popular after 1947. In rural Punjab, it was common to have tandoors.

In tandoori chicken, the chicken is marinated in yogurt along with garam masala, ginger – garlic paste and other spices, that depending on the choice recipe or ingredients. It is traditionally cooked at high temperatures in the Tandoor, nearly at 800 to 900 F. But we can also prepare on the traditional grill.

Now let’s see, what are the ingredients and procedure to prepare the Tandoori Chicken Recipe.


  • 1kg Chicken of medium size pieces
  • 2 tbsp of Oil for basting
  • Lime juice for sprinkle before ser

Ingredients for Marinade

  • 1 Cup of Yogurt
  • 2 tsp of Ginger – Garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp Garam masala powder
  • 2 Tbsp Lime juice
  • 2 Tbsp of Corn Flour
  • 1 tsp of mustard powder
  • 1 tbsp of Oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Red Food color (Optional)

Ingredients for Garam Masala

  • 1 Tsp of Cumin
  • 1 Tsp of Black Pepper
  • 1 Tsp of Cloves
  • 1 Tsp of Green Cardamom
  • 2 inch stick of Cinnamon
  • 2 Bay leaf



  1. Clean the chicken pieces with water and dry them properly.
  2. With the help of the knife, make small cuts on chicken pieces. These cuts will make the marinade to go all the way inside the chicken.
  3. Take a bowl and mix all the ingredients of the marinade and apply the marinade to chicken pieces and refrigerate for 4 – 6 hours.
  4. Before going to cook, preheat the oven to 500 F, if possible more. Line the baking sheet with foil and place cooking rack over it.
  5. Now put the chicken pieces on the cooling rack separately without touch each other and cook for 15 – 20 mins.
  6. After 7 to 8 mins of cooking turn them to other side and cook.
  7. The cooling rack helps to avoid the contact of chicken with dripping juices and keeps it crispy on the surfaces.
  8. In between keep basting as needed.
  9. If you want you can broil or grill it as your choice.
  10. The hot Crispy and Tasty tandoori chicken ready to serve.
  11. You can serve the hot tandoori with the sprinkle of lemon juice to add the more taste to it.
